Fred Lebow creó en 1970 la Maratón de Nueva York, que consistía en dar varias vueltas a Central Park. Tan sólo 127 corredores tomaron parte de la carrera. En 1976, en conmemoración del bicentenario de la creación de Estados Unidos, se decidió hacer una edición especial, saliendo de Staten Island y pasando por los cinco distritos de la ciudad. Era una idea loca, aunque cuajó, y ha quedado desde entonces con el mismo recorrido, convirtiéndose en la maratón más importante del mundo, con mas de 50.000 corredores.
En este vídeo trato de mostrar como fue para mí conocer esta maravillosa ciudad, y descubrir porque todo el mundo la considera la mejor carrera. No es por el recorrido, ni por la cantidad de corredores, ni por el dinero que mueve, aunque por cualquiera de esos motivos ya lo sería. Es la mejor del mundo por los neoyorquinos. Quieren y se sienten orgullosos de su maratón como nadie en el mundo, y eso se palpa en el ambiente desde que pisas la ciudad. Y eso amigos, no tiene precio.

Fred Lebow created in 1970 the New York Marathon, which consisted of going around Central Park several times. Only 127 runners took part in the race. In 1976, in commemoration of the bicentennial of the creation of the United States, it was decided to make a special edition, leaving Staten Island and passing through the five boroughs of the city. It was a crazy idea, but it has come together, and since then it has been the same route, becoming the most important marathon in the world, with more than 50,000 runners.
In this video I try to show how it was for me to know this wonderful city, and discover why everyone considers it the best race. It is not because of the route, nor because of the number of runners, nor because of the money that moves, although for any of those reasons it would already be. It is the best in the world for New Yorkers. They want and feel proud of their marathon like nobody else in the world, and that is palpable in the environment since you step on the city.
